Setting the Stomach

This is the first article of the formulary proper, and it is first for a reason that is not alphabetical. Every gland in the body builds what it makes out of raw materials that arrive from the intestine. Correct a thyroid without correcting the digestion that supplies it and you have asked a factory to work harder without sending it any steel. That is why the very first formula ever made in this therapy was made for the stomach, why almost every treatment you will build in the next eleven articles opens with digestive work, and why a therapist who knows only this article can still help most of the people who walk through the door.

Ten formulas are taught here, and they fall into two generations separated by the year 2000. The first three — Normal, Fast and Ajay Normal, with their combinations NAN and FAN, and the deliberately reversed Ulta Normal — were the very first to be made, and are so effective that even today, in many centres across the country, many people become completely well from these alone. But it was seen that for some people these were not enough. So after the year 2000 many further treatments were made for improving the digestive system: Chole, Vater, New Gal, CCK Normal, and the one the therapy declines to explain at all, Formula No. 4. (Figure 27.5)

The notation is closed. Every bracket, colon, ring, quoted letter, underline and Roman numeral you will meet in this article was taught once, completely, in Table 13 of How a Formula Is Built, "How a Formula Is Built". Nothing is explained again here, and nothing needs to be. If a line stops you, turn back to that table; every therapist does, for about a year.

The ground floor of the formulary

Digestion is the supply line for every other claim in this book

The stomach, and the pancreas, gall bladder and liver — all these glands must be in order, so that food may be digested; so that they, and all the other glands that make chemicals, may be able to make them properly. Read that sentence twice. It is not saying that digestion is important. It is saying that digestion is the supply line for every other claim in this wiki.

Before the named formulas there is one general remedy, and it is the thing you give when you are not yet sure what to give. Organ Clearance benefits everybody; by it the flow of blood in the related arteries towards an organ is increased, so that the cells and tissues around it receive a greater quantity of oxygen and their working capacity is increased. The name was given because it removes the obstructions of the blood arteries going to all the organs of the body, by which the pain of the organs beside the navel comes out. It may be given to small children and to elderly people daily, or even twice a day. That last clause is worth holding on to: in a article full of formulas with stop rules and prohibitions, here is one that a grandmother may have every morning.

Every person's bodily constitution is different, and so many kinds of formula have been made which provoke the different organs of the digestive system to work smoothly. What follows is those formulas, in the order they were made — which is also, conveniently, the order of increasing difficulty. (Figure 27.1)

The first formula ever made — Normal

The formula that was made first of all, for correcting the stomach, is the Normal formula. It is the commonest formula in the therapy, the one you will give more often than all the others put together, and the one against which every other digestive formula is described. Its order is a walk along the large bowel from its beginning towards its end, and that route — not a convention, a route — is taught with its step table in How a Formula Is Built. Here is the formula as a card.

Two things in that card deserve a therapist's attention rather than a student's.

The first is the width of the indication. Anybody, for small and middling ailments — and a healthy person, to keep the body in balance. There is no other formula in this wiki of which that is said. When a patient arrives with a complaint you have not met, when the pain points say the belly and nothing more particular, when you are covering a colleague's Tuesday and the card is unfamiliar — the Normal formula is where a careful therapist stands. It is also, for the same reason, the formula most often given by habit to somebody who needed something else. Examine first.

The second is the last line of the indications. Muscular dystrophy, motor neuron disorders and Guillain-Barré syndrome are named here for these digestive formulas, and they are not small names. Say clearly what is being claimed and what is not: these formulas address the digestion of a person who has one of those conditions, and the therapy records benefit. Nothing on this page says the condition is cured, and nothing on it entitles you to work instead of the care such a patient is already receiving. A person with ascending weakness that is getting worse by the day belongs in a hospital today, and you may treat alongside afterwards.

The same territory, swept — the Fast treatment

One or two seconds at each of eighteen to twenty close places

The Fast treatment formula is not the Normal formula performed quickly. It is a different stimulus delivered over the same ground, and the therapy is explicit that the result is even better than with the Normal formula.

The difference, stated exactly. While giving the Normal formula we apply pressure at three (or four) places on the thigh or the hand for six seconds. While giving the Fast formula we do not stay more than one or two seconds at any point, and we go on changing the place of the pressure, keeping the places so close together that pressure comes to be applied at about eighteen to twenty places on the hand or the foot.

Notice what has changed and what has not. The territory is the same — the same thighs, the same arms, the same limb-to-navel correspondences. The dwell has gone from six seconds to one or two. The number of contacts has gone from three or four to eighteen or twenty. Total time under the therapist's foot comes out broadly similar; what is entirely different is that no single place is loaded long enough to do what a six-second hold does, and a much larger surface is reached.

The formula defined by what it leaves out — Ajay Normal

Spl is left out, and the omission is the prescription

Where the Normal and Fast formulas improve the digestive power, the Ajay Normal formula sees to it that the absorption of digested elements takes place properly. It is another form of the Normal formula, and its defining feature is a deliberate absence.

Learn the shape of that argument, because repeats it a dozen times. An omission is an instruction. The blank space where Spl should be carries as much weight as any bracket in the line, and a therapist who copies this formula onto a card and quietly restores Spl — because the Normal formula has it, because the line looks unfinished — has not tidied a prescription. He has given a different one, to exactly the patient for whom the point was removed.

Two formulas given as one — NAN and FAN

Digestion then absorption — and the rescue for an adverse effect

When the digestion formula and the absorption formula are given together, the pair has a name and a number.

There is one further fact about (10) Medulla, printed among the Medulla series and easy to walk past, which explains something in a formula five pages further on. (10) Medulla, by means of the vagus nerve, stimulates every part of the digestive system except the descending colon. It also contracts the lungs and reduces the fast rate of the heart — and to patients of heart disease, only (10) Left Medulla is given. Hold on to the exception about the descending colon. It is the reason the CCK Normal formula ends where it ends.

One item in that list is not like the others, and a therapist who does not notice will one day be sorry. Indigestion, belching, no appetite, gas are complaints. Ulcer in the stomach is a diagnosis, and it has causes that can be found and treatment that cures it. Treat the digestion of a patient who has one, by all means; but pain in the upper belly that comes with weight loss, with vomiting, with black stool, with difficulty swallowing, or with a low haemoglobin, is a patient to be sent, today, to somebody who can look inside.

And the case that belongs to this page — the woman at the Chandigarh camp in 2001, who was given yesterday's treatment without examination, wept from pain she had not arrived with, and was relieved by one treatment of NAN — is told in full, with Guruji's own two instructions, in How a Formula Is Built. Read it again before you read the next section, because everything from here on is a formula that is right for somebody and wrong for the person standing behind them in the queue.

The formula made out of a mistake — Ulta Normal

Reversed, underlined, and stopped when the stool is formed

A a little earlier it was said that we cannot provoke the organs in an order of our own choosing. Here is the example of that, and it is an indication of Guruji's unique power of observation.

In the Normal formula we give Spl after Gal and Mu after Liv, which maintains normal peristalsis — the wave-like motion inside the intestines that keeps going of its own accord. But if a patient is treated with this order changed, then it was seen that the motion of the intestines becomes slow, and he also gets constipation. So it was decided that this treatment could be used to correct ordinary loose motions — that is, diarrhoea.

A formula was made out of an accident, by taking the accident seriously. That is worth saying plainly to a student, because it is the whole method of this therapy in one sentence: somebody noticed that a mistake had a reliable direction, and turned the direction into a prescription.

Three cautions of a different kind belong beside this formula, and they belong to you rather than to the card. "Ordinary" loose motions is a phrase doing serious work. Blood in the stool at any age; black tarry stool; fever with abdominal pain; severe or localised pain with a hard, guarding belly; a small child or a frail elder going dry; weight coming off; a change in bowel habit lasting more than a few weeks, especially after fifty — none of these is ordinary, and none of them is a treatment question before it is a referral question. Second, the formula names those whose motions are soft and who have to go two or three times a day, and some people who fit that description have always been like that and are perfectly well; treat the patient who has changed, not the patient whose habit is merely brisk. Third, high BP appears in the use column, and a blood pressure is not diagnosed from one reading taken by the person who has just treated you.

These three treatments were the very first to be made, and they are so effective that even today, in many centres across the country, many people become completely well from these alone. But it was seen that for some people these were not enough. So after the year 2000 many further treatments were made for improving the digestive system — and the first of them began with a complaint that everybody in India believes they already understand.

When the burning is not the acid — the Chole treatment

The acid is normal; the meal has not left the stomach

Often people used to come who said that after eating fried things they get a burning-like sensation in the chest. After giving them the NAN formula there was ease for a while, but then the burning would start again.

It is generally said that the burning is happening only because the acid in the stomach has increased — whereas this is not always so. It is Guruji's unique discovery that the burning in the chest happens from the following causes:

The liver or the gall bladder are sluggish — working at a slow speed.

Cholecystokinin or secretin are not being made in the body.

Or there is some blockage in the ampoulla of Vater.

If the patient reports that some while after eating fried things the stomach feels heavy, or sour belches come, or there is a burning in the chest — then their liver or gall bladder is sluggish, that is, not working properly. And the therapy's own footnote to that sentence is worth keeping exactly as it stands, with its qualifier intact: perhaps more than 80% of patients have exactly this. (Figure 27.2)

The first answer is not the Chole formula. It is a preparatory pair, given before anything else.

The second matter is protein. The motility of the jejunum will also remain low so long as the proteins in the duodenum are not properly digested. Such patients say that after peanuts, rajma, chholé, or non-veg — heavy proteins — they get sour belches, or the stomach feels heavy. Learn that list by heart; it is the question that separates the fat patient from the protein patient, and Indian households will give you the answer readily because these are foods with names and occasions attached to them.

From there the formula assembled itself out of three requirements. (Figure 27.3)

Notice the two variants at the foot of that card, because they are a small masterpiece of matching. If this treatment is to be used for setting the stomach, then giving it in the following way brings still better results — and the only thing that changes is the third point. Liv for secretin; Gal for CCK. The pairing is not arbitrary: secretin's business is with the ducts, and the liver belongs to that response; CCK's business is with muscle and with the acinar cells, and the gall bladder belongs to that one. The route by which a thigh reaches either is the therapy's claim; the map of which hormone acts where is simply correct.

What else the Chole treatment was found to do — and what it was withdrawn from

Some patients who had burning in the chest also had high BP. When this treatment was given, it was seen that their systolic BP falls. The reasoning offered for it is this. For our digestive system to work rightly it is very necessary that the PSN — the para-sympathetic nervous system — should work properly; one chief work of the PSN is to increase the flow of blood to the digestive organs at the right time. When the working of the PSN is spoiled, how will the food be digested? And in high BP patients it has been seen that they have a great deal of pain in the part just above the navel — which means their intestines, especially the duodenum and jejunum, are not getting blood properly. From which it was inferred that in their body the functions of secretin and CCK will not be able to happen properly.

Not only this — when the PSN works properly, insulin will increase in the body, and the quantity of sugar in the blood will be reduced. That is perhaps why this treatment suited some diabetic patients. But some other diabetic patients did not feel well on being given (10) Medulla. So perhaps (10) Medulla harms them.

And one further note, which is a warning rather than an indication. If during pregnancy a woman gets high BP, then arterial spasm occurs in her kidneys, brain and liver — a kind of tightening comes into the arteries so that they cannot contract properly, and this same effect will certainly fall on the child's organs too. Because of high BP in pregnancy, proteins pass out in abnormal quantity through the urine, and both the flow of blood inside the kidneys and the glomerular filtration rate are reduced — meaning that from that woman's body the toxins, the unnecessary and waste things, will not be able to come out properly. The effect of all that will certainly fall upon the child.

Opening the door the bile comes through — the Vater treatment

103, 408, 10 — and max., a dose decided at the mat each day

Sometimes patients came who certainly got benefit from the above treatments, but after some days the pain came back. When the pain points were checked, a good deal of pain was found in Gal and Liv. (3) Gal (7) Liv was given, and other treatments too, but even so no special difference was found.

So, after much thought, an inference was drawn: if there is some blockage in the road by which the bile comes — in the ampoulla of Vater — then the bile will begin to congeal in the gall bladder itself, and its effect will fall on the liver too, will it not? And from there the question changed shape. It stopped being which point relieves this pain and became what all must be done to open this ampoulla of Vater.

As soon as this treatment was given, the patient got such relief — what is there to say! So the inference was a hundred percent correct, and this treatment must have opened whatever obstruction there was in the road of the bile as far as the ampoulla of Vater. Therefore it was named the Vater treatment.

And one sentence in the account of it belongs to the whole therapy rather than to this formula. In this therapy we do not treat the disease; rather, we improve the body. Since our treatment brings a change in the body's chemicals, keeping that in mind the treatment is done the next day: this formula was made to improve the gall bladder and liver, so after each day's treatment those glands will work still better. The formula is not repeated because the disease is still there. It is repeated onto a body that is not the same body it met yesterday.

Here the word max., that is maximum, has a special meaning. It is not that (8) Gal or (10) Liv is to be given on all days.

Every day, before this treatment, the therapist must check the patient's Gal and Liv pain. According to the pain, how much Gal and Liv to give that day is to be decided by oneself.

For the first few days give (8) Gal or (10) Liv; but after some days, as the pain decreases, keep reducing the quantity — (3) Gal in place of (8) Gal, or (3) Liv in place of (10) Liv.

The formula that came out of what is inside bile — New Gal

Five formulas as one: first the stomach, then the gall bladder

This formula was made in the year 2006 itself. As the number of patients increased, so the knowledge about the functions of the glands increased, and it came to be known that bile looks after several functions in the body. It was found that bile has two chief qualities — antiseptic, protecting from germs, and laxative, driving away constipation.

Then it was seen that those who had any problem whatever in the skin had pain in Gal — and many of them also had constipation. Since in the Chole formula Gal is stimulated, that treatment was given to those patients. The itching certainly reduced, but its effect lasted only a few hours; and such people's stomach was always upset. From which the conclusion that gives the formula its shape: first their stomach should be put right; only then will the gall bladder work properly.

One more piece was needed. Nowadays it has been definitely proved that the (15) Medulla treatment provokes the making of acetylcholine in the brain. Acetylcholine is a neuro-transmitter — necessary for every function of the para-sympathetic nervous system. So wherever we give (10) Medulla, giving (15) Medulla before it brings very good results. Keep that sentence: it is a general rule of construction wearing the clothes of a particular formula, and you will meet (15) Medulla in front of (10) Medulla again and again in the articles that follow.

Read that card from the top and the logic is audible. The whole digestive sequence first, because a gall bladder attached to a bad stomach will not work; then absorption, in its mild form; then the gall bladder itself, worked repeatedly through the day; then the acetylcholine rung, because everything after it is parasympathetic work; and only then the Chole formula, which is the gall bladder treatment proper. It is the longest single prescription in this part of the wiki and the least arbitrary.

For the past two or three years the results coming from this treatment are beyond belief. It is excellent for all the following:

To remove very hard constipation. To calm those who have extreme anger.

Psoriasis, eczema, warts and moles, fungal infection, or any other skin disease.

If any problem has ever arisen from pus, or there is pus because of some disease — for example, pus or water coming from the ear.

To reduce hyperactivity in autism or in other children.

If from a blow or some illness the tissues or a ligament have been torn or destroyed, or the cartilage of the knee is to be made.

If there are wrinkles in the skin, to correct them — in old age or at a young age.

To correct trembling in the hands — Parkinson's patients too have obtained benefit.

To provoke the wave of peristalsis in the intestines, and to increase hunger.

And the uses as they are set down formally: to 'set' the stomach; to remove constipation; to correct the pains of Gal and Liv; if a ligament or cartilage has been destroyed, to correct it; very good for ringworm, psoriasis or other skin diseases, because bile does the work of an antiseptic, a germ-killer.

Three further instructions travel with that list, and each is a rule of practice rather than an indication.

The first is about children and their mothers' pregnancies. This same treatment is to be given to those children whose mother, during pregnancy, had high BP, or any skin disease, or itching. It has been proved by enquiry that among the women whose children have autism, some were found to have had skin disease during pregnancy. And: if some child comes to you for a long course of treatment, and on enquiry you learn that during pregnancy his mother's BP had gone up — whether they are children of dull intellect, or have come for some other illness — they are first to be given only this treatment for ten to fifteen days, and there will be considerable benefit. Afterwards other suitable treatments may be given.

The second is a claim about prevention. Those whose fats are not digested, if given this treatment once or twice a week, will never get gall stones.

The third is not an instruction at all but an open question, and it is left exactly as it stands. Epinephrine also contracts the muscle of the gall bladder. So in days to come, if (6) Lt. Swt is added to this treatment, perhaps it will become still more effective — this is to be tried.

The shortest of them, and the one that reaches furthest — CCK Normal

Ten seconds between each point, and an ending at the sacrum

This is one more treatment which stimulates the whole digestive system. Its order is as follows.

Two things about that card are worth more than their length.

The first is the ten-second gap. Everywhere else in this article you are told how many six-second applications to give and in what order; here alone you are told how long to wait between the points. Ten seconds is not a rest in the sense of the one-minute and ninety-second intervals of Table 8 in How a Formula Is Built — it is a breath and a re-positioning, and its work is to stop the five steps running together into one continuous press. It has its own stated purpose, like every written interval in this therapy: by this, digestion and absorption improve.

The second is where the formula ends. Look back at what (10) Medulla does: by means of the vagus nerve it stimulates every part of the digestive system except the descending colon. So a formula whose aim is the whole digestive system has a hole in it at the far end — and the last step, (2) S4, S5, is placed exactly over that hole. The anatomy stated in one place is acted upon in another, a little further on, without comment. That is what it looks like from the inside when a system is coherent, and a student who notices it will read the rest of differently.

And a word about mild constipation, because the adjective is doing real work. Normal bowel habit runs all the way from three times a day to three times a week, and a good many people who describe themselves as mildly constipated are inside it. Treat the patient whose habit has changed, and remember that constipation of recent onset after the age of fifty, or with blood, or with weight loss, is a referral before it is a formula.

The play of Hari — Formula No. 4

The supervisors provoked, not the workers — then the pain of Pan

This formula should be called not the gift of Hari but the very play of Hari. Its results are so wonderful — but the order used in this treatment, and the points, are different from the other treatments. How this marvellous treatment occurred to Guruji's mind — let Hari alone know.

Many kinds of patients used to come. Ordinarily all of them obtained relief within a few days. But among them were some people who, even after some days of all the main treatments, still had very great, indeed extreme pain at the Pan point and around the navel. And they always had a complaint of indigestion.

So the thinking went on for several days: what is to be done for these?

The therapy also records, on the same page, how the intensity of abdominal pain was written on the card in the early days — a number above each point before the treatment and a number below it afterwards, so that Pan⁴₂ meant number four pain before, number two after. That notation, and the plus-and-minus signs that replaced it when it became confusable with the application counts, are taught in full in Uncommon Problems, "Points for Uncommon Problems", and used again in The Record That Shows the Truth, "The Record That Shows the Truth". It is mentioned here for one reason only: the formula takes its name from that scale. It is the formula for number four pain.

Choosing between them

Not which formula is best, but which bottleneck this patient has

Ten formulas, one system, and a patient in front of you. The question is never which is the best digestive formula — it is which bottleneck is this. The table below is the article read backwards, from the finding to the formula. (Figure 27.6)

Questions students ask

1. I am twenty-two and have just started on the formulary. Which of these ten should I learn first, and properly? Normal, Ajay Normal and NAN. Between them they cover most of what walks in, they are the parts out of which the later formulas are assembled, and NAN is the thing you give when a treatment of yours has gone wrong — which you want in your hands before you need it, not after. Learn Fast next, and Ulta Normal only when you are confident you will remember to stop it.

2. I am a housewife learning this to treat my family. My husband gets burning in the chest and takes a tablet for it. Am I allowed to treat him? Yes, and you are allowed to ask him a better question than his chemist does: after which food, and how long afterwards? If it is forty minutes after fried food or heavy protein, with sour belches, then this article says the acid is very probably normal and the meal is not moving. Give the gall bladder and liver pair first. And do not ask him to stop his tablet — that is his doctor's to change, not yours.

3. If the Fast treatment gives a better result than the Normal formula, why would anybody give the Normal formula? Because it is written into far more places than Fast is. Normal is part I of NAN, it is the formula that brings a body back after Ulta Normal, and it is the one described as suitable for anybody, including a well person. And because the Fast sweep is genuinely harder to give well: a therapist who cannot hold the spacing at eighteen to twenty places is giving a worse Normal formula, not a better Fast one.

4. I am a physician. What is being claimed for these formulas, precisely? Three separable things, and they should be kept separate. An observation: tenderness at named sites around the navel accompanies these complaints, changes from day to day, and improves with these sequences, across a very large clinical experience. A causal account of the symptom in the Chole section — that post-fatty-meal burning often reflects delayed gastric emptying rather than raised acid — which is ordinary physiology and independently correct. And a proposed route, that pressure on the limbs alters the blood and nerve supply of the relevant organs, which is the therapy's own hypothesis and has not been measured. State the first two without leaning on the third.

5. I have no science at all. What is the difference between digestion and absorption? Digestion is breaking the food into pieces small enough to be useful. Absorption is carrying those pieces through the wall of the intestine into the body. A grinding mill and a delivery van. You can have a mill running perfectly and no van, and the household still goes hungry — which is why the therapy gives one formula for the mill and another for the van, and then gives them one after the other and calls the pair NAN.

1. 6. Why does Gal get pressed on the left thigh when the gall bladder is on the right? Because pressure on the left limbs relieves pains on the right of the navel — the correspondence rule taught in How a Formula Is Built. And because a treatment point names a technique, not a place inside you. Nothing in this therapy ever claims that your foot is on somebody's gall bladder.

7. I work in a village and have no laboratory. The Vater section mentions ultrasound and a blood enzyme. Am I supposed to have those? No. You are supposed to know that they exist, so that you can say to a patient whose pain keeps returning: there is a way of finding out whether something is blocked, and it is worth doing. A therapist who can name the test that would settle a question is not less of a therapist for not owning the machine. What you must have is the referral, and the habit of using it.

8. The word max. only appears in one formula. Does it apply anywhere else? Only where it is written. Everywhere else in this article a bracketed count at a chemical point is exact. max. is a marked exception, made for a formula whose whole aim is to flush an obstruction and then stop — and marked precisely because if it were not marked, everybody would give eight every day for a month. 9. New Gal takes a long time. May I give only the last part, since that is the gall bladder work? No, and the account tells you exactly what happens if you do. That experiment was run: the Chole formula alone was given to patients with skin trouble, the itching reduced but its effect lasted only a few hours, and such people's stomach was always upset. The four parts in front of part V are there because of that result. First the stomach; only then will the gall bladder work properly.

10. I am sixty-nine and learning this for my own household. Formula No. 4 turns the patient three times in four minutes. Is there a shorter way? Not one that is this formula. What there is, is How a Formula Is Built's honest treatment of the problem: where order and comfort pull against each other, a compromise may be made, its cost is named, and it is written on the card. If turning a frail person prone and back is genuinely unsafe, that is a conversation with your teacher about what to give instead — not a licence to drop a step. 11. A woman comes with loose motions and I give Ulta Normal. Two days later she says the motions have stopped completely. Do I give it again tomorrow? No. You ask her what the stool looked like, and if it is formed like a banana you stop that day, give the Normal formula for at least one day, and write on the card that you did. Stopped completely is not the endpoint; formed is the endpoint. And note the phrase in the caution: even after the motions have become firm, giving this same treatment can cause them to complain of constipation.

12. So many of these formulas begin with (10) Medulla. If I have a diabetic patient, does that rule out half the article? It rules out what it rules out, and no more. (10) Medulla is not given to patients of diabetes and of cancer — so Chole, Vater in its standard form, CCK Normal and Formula No. 4 all need thought in a diabetic patient. What is not ruled out is Normal, Fast, Ajay Normal, NAN, Ulta Normal and Organ Clearance, which is a great deal of article. And there is a second sentence to hold beside the first: those diabetic patients to whom (10) Medulla does not feel good should not be given (10) Medulla. Both sentences stand; the more cautious governs.

Questions patients ask

1. "I have taken an acidity tablet for nine years and it works. Why are you telling me my acid is normal?" I am not telling you the tablet does nothing. I am telling you that the burning has more than one cause, and yours has a pattern — it comes after fried and heavy food, forty minutes later, with sour belches. That pattern usually means the meal is sitting in your stomach longer than it should, because the next part of the gut has not finished with the last mouthful. The acid in there is ordinary acid; it is only staying too long. Keep taking whatever your doctor gave you. Let us see what happens to the pattern in three weeks.

1. 2. "Why do you press my neck for a stomach problem?" Because the nerve that tells most of the digestive system to get to work leaves the brain and runs down through there, and a good deal of what we do for digestion begins at that point. Your stomach is not being neglected; it is being sent a message from the place the messages come from.

3. "You are asking me about my motions every single day. Is something wrong?" Nothing is wrong. For these few days I am deliberately giving part of your treatment in reverse order, because that is what settles loose motions — and that kind of treatment has to be stopped at the right moment, or it can push you the other way into constipation. The only way I can know the right moment is to ask you. As soon as it is properly formed, I change it back.

4. "My mother-in-law had this same trouble and was given a different treatment. Why is mine different?" Because a treatment here is chosen from what my hands find on you today, not from the name of the complaint. Two people who both say "gas" can have entirely different things going on, and the same person can need something different on Thursday from what she needed on Monday. If I gave you her treatment I would be treating her, in your body.

5. "The report says my gall bladder is fine. So why are you working on it?" Good — that report has ruled out the things it looks for, and that matters. What it does not tell us is how fast the organ is working, which is a different question from whether it is damaged. What I am going by is a tenderness I found on you, that you did not know was there, and what happens to your symptoms over the next few weeks. If anything in your picture changes, I will send you back for another opinion.

6. "My son is four and cannot sit still for a moment. Will this make him normal?" I will not promise you that, and please be careful of anyone who does. What I can tell you is that this treatment has helped a number of restless children to become calmer — over months, not days — and that we would start with ten to fifteen days and then look at him together. What I also want is that his hearing is checked, that somebody looks at his sleep, and that he is seen by people who assess children for a living. This works best alongside that, and never instead of it.

1. 7. "The card says 'Chole'. Is that a chemical you are giving me?" No. Nothing is given to you here — no medicine, no injection, no instrument of any kind. That is the name of a sequence of pressures, and it is named after a hormone your own body makes when you eat fatty food. The hope is that your body makes it better. If a doctor asks, please tell them exactly that, in those words.
