From What the Bowel Tells You

Reading the stool

The chart of seven forms, colour, and whether it floats

The patient will not describe a stool accurately in words, because he has no words for it and would rather not try. Show him a picture and let him point. (Figure 10.1)

Key teaching

What the form tells you about the direction

The form tracks the speed of the journey better than the number of motions ever will, and the speed is what your work changes.

Form · The journey · Which kingdom

1 hard lumps · Very slow — squeezed nearly dry on the left · Acidic — expect tenderness at Mu° Left

2–3 lumpy or cracked sausage · Slow, but moving · Acidic, milder

4 smooth soft sausage · Right · Neither

5 soft blobs, easily passed · Faster than it should be — this is SSS · Alkaline — expect tenderness at Liv° Right , and undigested items

7 watery · Nothing reclaimed at all · Alkaline

And the two ends carry the two families of ordinary disease. On the hard end: constipation, piles, fissure at the anus, fistula, pimples, dandruff and scaling, hair falling or greying before its time, prolapse of the uterus or of the rectum. On the loose end: fits, epilepsy, cerebral palsy. Two rows of one chart, and a bowel finding that reaches all the way to a child's seizure.

Key teaching

Colour, and what to do about each

Ordinary brown.

The colour is not made by food but by the pigment in bile, altered on the way down: brown is a report that bile is arriving.

Pale, clay-coloured, putty. Bile is not arriving in normal quantity. With dark urine, or yellowness of the eyes, a doctor's matter today. ▲ Take care

Black and tarry. Never explain this away. There is a treatment in the formulary — Large Folic Black, given after the undigested-food work — after which the black colour of the face is said to be reduced by a quarter immediately, and the next morning the first inch of the stool will be black, meaning waste is coming out by way of the rectum. Learn that as it stands, with its boundary: it accounts for the first inch on the morning after that treatment, and for nothing else. Iron blackens a stool harmlessly; so does an ulcer bleeding higher up. ▲ Take care

The colours and consistencies that are not a matter for the mat at all — a bulky pale greasy floating stool with weight coming off, a black tarry stool, blood of any colour at any age — are listed with their instructions in The Fire and the Ash, "The Fire and the Ash", and are asked about of every patient, every time. Rectal bleeding is never put down to piles until a doctor has excluded what else it can be, and a patient genuinely having piles does not make the blood theirs.

Four readings are taken every time — form, frequency, effort and content — and none stands alone. Their information has to be correlated to arrive at a proper diagnosis, together with the pain points around the navel, the B₁₂ and folic acid points, and, in women, the menstrual history, which is an additional and very valuable tool. Content — the undigested items — is The Fire and the Ash's question, not this article's.

From Each Point in Use

The bowel points — MU, CONST, DYS

Table 6 — The three bowel points, and the substitution written for one of them

Point and variantWhat it is used forWhen it must not be usedNotes
Mu — म्यूकस, mucusFor pain just to the left of the navel. To stimulate the middle part of the descending colon. Good for constipation, and for a blocked noseIt stimulates the mucous membrane from the mouth to the anus. So do not give to those who have a cold, or whose nose is running, or from whose mouth excessive saliva is coming. In its place, (4) Down arrow may be given ▲ Take careThe only chemical point whose prohibition names a substitute. Method:
(1) Const / (4) ConstIn hard constipation there is pain in the region above and to the left of the navel. This treatment removes that pain, and also relieves the constipation that occurs in hypothyroidism, in bamboo spine (ankylosing spondylitis), in Parkinson's disease and in paralysisDo not give to those who have loose motions ▲ Take careThe palpation finding comes before the treatment: the tenderness above and left of the navel is what selects the point
DysLoose motions — but give this only if there is pain in the upper part to the right of the navel; otherwise not. It may be given for a day or two to correct loose motionsDo not give to those who have constipation. And the standing warning: its use must be undertaken only with great thought — because it works against the natural motion, the peristalsis, of the intestines ▲ Take careThree brakes on one point: a palpation gate, a time limit of a day or two, and a warning about the mechanism itself
Key teaching

Dys — the most self-restrained point in the therapy

Read the three brakes again, because between them they are a small course in how to hold a powerful treatment.

The gate. Give this only if there is pain in the upper part to the right of the navel; otherwise not. Not if the patient has loose motions — the complaint is not enough. There must be a finding under your fingers.

The ceiling. It may be given for a day or two. A day or two is not a suggestion about how long it takes to work. It is the outer limit.

The reason. Its use must be undertaken only with great thought — because it works against the natural motion of the intestines. Loose motions are partly the body emptying something it wants out. A treatment that slows the bowel is holding that something in. The therapy says this about its own point, in its own voice, and asks you to think before you use it. ▲ Take care

And there is a reason that warning is not squeamishness. The gut carries its own nervous system — a complete network of nerve cells in the wall of the intestine, enough of them to run the whole organ on their own; cut every connection to the brain and an intestine still senses what is inside it, still decides, and still moves it along in orderly waves. Which means a bowel that has speeded up has usually decided to speed up, and something is in it that its own wiring wants gone. It works against the natural motion of the intestines is respect for a second brain that knows more about the situation than the therapist does.

From APR — Abdominal Pain

The third kind — abdominal pain without loose motions

The motility is correct, so go round the navel instead of slowing it

It is not always the case that every patient will have loose motions along with abdominal pain. There are some who have only abdominal pain, and no complaint at all about their motions. For them, some change is needed in the line of thinking.

Key teaching

Why class C is built the other way round

If there is no problem with the motions, it means the motility of the intestine is correct. So it must not be tampered with.

We have only to provoke all the organs of the abdomen — and this therapy is famous for that work.

Everything follows from those two sentences. No Adr, no Swt, no Medulla, nothing reversed and nothing underlined. A bowel that is working is left alone, and the work is done entirely by bringing blood to the organs.

And here is where the story that opened this article turns into a formula. From many years of experience, Guruji had found out which organs of the body, on being pressed, take out the pain of which part of the abdomen. He had reached the position where, at anyone's wish or asking, he could take out the pain of any specified place in the abdomen, announcing it beforehand as a challenge. And the best part of it is that he made that knowledge so simple, and taught it to so many people, that anyone at all will be able to do this work.

So he found a very simple way.

Key teaching

The thought that became class C

If the blood circulation is increased above the navel, below it, in front of it and behind it — on all sides — then the pain will come out of itself.

Is that not a marvellous thought? It replaces a memorised table of which point empties which corner with a single instruction: supply the whole sphere. You do not have to know where the pain is. You have to go round it. (Figure 30.4)

Class C, and the formula built the other way round. The same organs pointed the opposite way — reversed and underlined where the bowel runs too fast, normal order where it is correct — with what class C leaves out and why, its card, its two inseparable pairs, and the mistake of giving it to a patient with loose motions.

Look at the pairing at the end of parts III and IV, because it is a rule you already hold. (8) Ch. Only is balanced by (20) ↑\|↓ — Ch. Only reduces alkali, the Round arrow reduces acid, and matched by their counts they hold the balance the formula has set. That is one of the four inseparable pairs of How a Formula Is Built, and here it appears twice in one formula, closing two parts in succession. The acid-and-alkali pair itself belongs to Water and Salt, "Water and Salt"; what matters here is that you never write the first of them without the second.
