Dys — the dysentery point
Finding it. The right upper quadrant, in the middle ring — the mirror of Const. Right
What is beneath. The ascending colon and the bend of the bowel under the liver; below them the caecum and the last stretch of small intestine.
Why the name. The other symptom-named point: in loose motions there is sharp pain at just this point. The side is part of the instruction — the finding that licenses the Dys treatment is pain in the upper part to the right of the navel. Right
Dys — Dysentery (डिसेंट्री — read aloud as dysentery)
With both feet, press in the middle of the left thigh for six seconds and release. Do it as many times as the number written. This gives relief in ordinary loose motions.
This is given for information only. In practice this point is used next to never.
| Patient's position | Supine, one pillow under both thighs Supine |
|---|---|
| Where the feet are placed | Both feet, in the middle of the left thigh Left Both sides |
| Duration and repetitions | 6 seconds, as many times as the number written 6 sec |
| What it is for | Ordinary loose motions — though it is recorded that in practice the point is used next to never |
Two differences between this pair are the substance of the instruction. Const is given one foot after the other, Dys with both feet; Const goes on the right thigh, Dys on the left. They are a matched pair on opposite thighs answering opposite quadrants of the belly. And notice that the point is set down here together with the plain statement that it is scarcely ever used: learn Dys so that you can read a card that carries it, and do not go looking for reasons to give it.
The pillow line printed beneath these entries
निम्न उपचारों के लिए जरूरत न हो तो सिर के नीचे तकिया न दें।
For the treatments that follow, if there is no need for it, do not place a pillow under the head. Supine ▲ Take care
The standing supine rule said once more where the therapist moves to the head end, and a pillow up there is in his way rather than under his eye.
From Each Point in Use
The bowel points — MU, CONST, DYS
Table 6 — The three bowel points, and the substitution written for one of them
| Point and variant | What it is used for | When it must not be used | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mu — म्यूकस, mucus | For pain just to the left of the navel. To stimulate the middle part of the descending colon. Good for constipation, and for a blocked nose | It stimulates the mucous membrane from the mouth to the anus. So do not give to those who have a cold, or whose nose is running, or from whose mouth excessive saliva is coming. In its place, (4) Down arrow may be given ▲ Take care | The only chemical point whose prohibition names a substitute. Method: |
| (1) Const / (4) Const | In hard constipation there is pain in the region above and to the left of the navel. This treatment removes that pain, and also relieves the constipation that occurs in hypothyroidism, in bamboo spine (ankylosing spondylitis), in Parkinson's disease and in paralysis | Do not give to those who have loose motions ▲ Take care | The palpation finding comes before the treatment: the tenderness above and left of the navel is what selects the point |
| Dys | Loose motions — but give this only if there is pain in the upper part to the right of the navel; otherwise not. It may be given for a day or two to correct loose motions | Do not give to those who have constipation. And the standing warning: its use must be undertaken only with great thought — because it works against the natural motion, the peristalsis, of the intestines ▲ Take care | Three brakes on one point: a palpation gate, a time limit of a day or two, and a warning about the mechanism itself |
Dys — the most self-restrained point in the therapy
Read the three brakes again, because between them they are a small course in how to hold a powerful treatment.
The gate. Give this only if there is pain in the upper part to the right of the navel; otherwise not. Not if the patient has loose motions — the complaint is not enough. There must be a finding under your fingers.
The ceiling. It may be given for a day or two. A day or two is not a suggestion about how long it takes to work. It is the outer limit.
The reason. Its use must be undertaken only with great thought — because it works against the natural motion of the intestines. Loose motions are partly the body emptying something it wants out. A treatment that slows the bowel is holding that something in. The therapy says this about its own point, in its own voice, and asks you to think before you use it. ▲ Take care
And there is a reason that warning is not squeamishness. The gut carries its own nervous system — a complete network of nerve cells in the wall of the intestine, enough of them to run the whole organ on their own; cut every connection to the brain and an intestine still senses what is inside it, still decides, and still moves it along in orderly waves. Which means a bowel that has speeded up has usually decided to speed up, and something is in it that its own wiring wants gone. It works against the natural motion of the intestines is respect for a second brain that knows more about the situation than the therapist does.

Why is Dys printed at all if it is used next to never? Because an old card may carry it, and a therapist who cannot read a line cannot give the formula it sits in.
