The card that was right in every line but one

A composite, assembled from a hundred evenings at the ashram rather than from one.

She was twenty-three, in her second year, and she had written the best card anyone in that batch had written. The patient was a man of fifty-one with long-standing constipation, thinning hair, a dull ache under the right ribs and skin that had been scaling on both shins since the cold weather. She had palpated him properly, found tenderness at Const and at Gal, and built her card out of what she had found: (4) Const for the bowel, (4) Thrd for the hair and the skin and the sluggish afternoons, (1) Pt. Gal × 6 for the scaling skin with constipation, where the benefit is great.

Every one of those choices was correct. Every one of them is written, in this article, in the column headed what it is used for. She showed the card to her teacher with the small pride of somebody who has finally stopped guessing.

He read it, and asked her one question. "Does he wheeze?" She did not know. She went back and asked, and the man said yes — since childhood, worse in the cold weather, an inhaler in his shirt pocket that he had not thought worth mentioning because nobody had asked. Two lines of her card came off it that evening. Not because they were the wrong treatment for his skin and his bowel; they were the right treatment for his skin and his bowel. They came off because of a line printed in a box beneath each of them, in the column she had not yet learnt to read.

For nine articles you have been learning where the points are and how they are given. This article turns the atlas over and reads the other side of every card: what each point is for, and who must not be given it. It is the article a therapist opens with a patient lying in front of him and a half-written card in his hand.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN HERE

By the end of this article you will be able to:

Look up any chemical point or any physical point in this therapy and say, in one breath, what it is used for and when it must not be used.

Read a bracketed count as a selector, not a strength — and explain why (2) Pan and (4) Pan are two different treatments with opposite prohibitions.

Tell apart the three kinds of caution in this therapy: the one reasoned from what the point does, the one learnt at the mat by watching a patient get worse, and the one that names a substitute in the same breath.

Name, without looking, the points withheld in pregnancy, in menstruation, in diabetes, in high and low blood pressure, in cancer, in kidney failure, in fits, in asthma and from a growing child — and say what is given instead where a substitute is written.

Give the two paired instructions that must never be separated: P point followed immediately by (6) WD, and Ton 'T' followed immediately by Sangam points.

Say which pairs of treatments must not be given in the same session, and why each pair pulls in opposite directions.

Build a treatment card by reading the prohibitions first and the indications second, and explain to a patient, without frightening her, why a point that would help her is not being given today.
