Where this family ends and the index begins

Nine treatments here; the cranial-nerve index belongs to Chapter 37

The family you have just learned is nine treatments that grew up in their own right. Beside it stands something else: a complete index of Medulla treatments, running (1) through (12) — with (11) split into (11) Left and (11) Right — each entry claiming the work of the cranial nerve of that number; and then a short second table for (15), (20) and (30), headed by the note that apart from the cranial nerves, these Medulla treatments provoke the actions of other chemicals.

That index, and the twelve cranial nerves one by one, and the polarity rule that decides side, belong to Cranial Nerve and Brain Formulas, "The Twelve Messengers", which teaches them whole. They are not taught twice. What belongs here is the boundary — and the parts of the index that add something to the nine members of this family. Those additions have been carried into the cards above, and they are collected once more below so that nothing is lost between the two articles.

(12) Medulla	It provokes the hippocampus. To correct fits that come during sleep or immediately after rising from sleep. It immediately kills worms or germs in the stomach or the intestines
(15) Medulla	Acetylcholine — to stimulate the muscles, and in respiratory diseases, especially those who feel at night as if the breath stops for some time
(20) Medulla	Dopamine — Parkinson's; pneumonia in children; or women in whom the quantity of prolactin has increased
(30) Medulla	Prostaglandins — inflammation, side effects of medicines, ulcer in the stomach, asthma or breathing troubles and so on. Do not give to heart patients ▲ Take care

The counts absent from that list — (1), (3), (5), (7), (9), (11) Left and (11) Right — are the cranial-nerve treatments proper, and they are Cranial Nerve and Brain Formulas's, entire. Between smell and the shoulder there is a great deal to learn, and it is taught there in one place rather than scattered here. Complete and detailed information about the functions of the cranial nerves has been given at the end. (Figure 31.6)

One further thing belongs to the boundary and to nowhere else, so learn it here. The rest between the rounds of a Medulla line is one and a half minutes, and the instruction establishing it is written of the cranial-nerve Medulla treatments: all the Medulla treatments of those tables are to be given three times at an interval of one and a half minutes. When you meet × 3 trts. on a Medulla line, that is the interval it is asking for. Table 8, How a Formula Is Built.

Up to (12) the number is claimed to index a structure — the cranial nerve of that number, doing that nerve's work. Above it, the number is simply the count that was found to produce an effect on a chemical: acetyl choline at fifteen, dopamine at twenty, prostaglandins at thirty.

The therapy marks that change itself, with a line of its own between the two tables: apart from the cranial nerves, the following Medulla treatments provoke the actions of other chemicals. It does not blur the two, and neither should the student. When you are asked what a Medulla number means, the honest answer has two halves, and you give the half that matches the number on the card.

(12) Gas 'I' works like (20) Medulla

Two points, two families, one errand — dopamine

The last thing this article owes you is a promise made back in the atlas, and it turns out to be the neatest illustration in of what a formula family actually is.

Gas 'I' is not a Medulla. It is a point on the calves, in the digestive group, with a dose ladder of its own — (3), (6), (9), (12) — and the reasoning that built that ladder, beginning with a Parkinson's patient whose tenderness was at Gas 'I' and whose trembling eased when it was given, is taught in full in Correcting the Two Kingdoms, "Correcting the Two Kingdoms". It is not repeated here.

What is taught here is the sentence that joins the two families.

(12) Gas 'I' is given in Parkinson's disease to produce dopamine. It works like (20) Medulla.

Two points. Two families. Two positions — one supine at the calves, one seated at the nape. One errand: dopamine.

And the reason there can be two is the reason this therapy keeps giving: in our intestines there are enteric neurons, and those neurons make, in smaller quantity, the very same chemicals that are made in larger quantity in the brain. So a chemical the therapy wants can sometimes be asked for at the head and sometimes at the gut, and the two requests are for the same thing.

Why this matters in practice, and not only as a curiosity. A bar on one of the two does not bar the other. A Parkinson's patient with loose motions cannot have (12) Gas 'I'; he can have (20) Medulla. A Parkinson's patient who cannot be seated — too weak, too unsteady — can have the Medulla work lying down, which is expressly allowed, or can have the calf work instead. Knowing that two roads reach one place is what lets a therapist keep treating when one road closes.

Two numbers that look alike on two cards are not a rule

A student who has read Correcting the Two Kingdoms carefully meets a second set of paired numbers there — 8 against 20, and 4 against 10 — in the balance between Ch. Only and the Round arrow, and sooner or later concludes that (8) Medulla and (20) Medulla must balance one another too, or that (4) and (10) are a matched pair.

They are not. Those proportions belong to a different pair of points entirely, with a different logic, and that pair is one of the four inseparable pairs established in How a Formula Is Built — (8) Ch. Only with (20) ↑|↓. The formula they belong to, and the acid-and-alkali balance they strike, are Water and Salt's, whole.

In the Medulla family, (8) and (20) are given together — for height, because dopamine and serotonin both increase the secretion rate of growth hormone. That is a partnership, not a balance, and it has nothing to do with the other pair beyond a coincidence of arithmetic. Two numbers that look alike on two different cards are not a rule.

A CASE FROM PRACTICE

The teacher who came about her hands and left with her prolactin checked

A composite, built from the kind of visit in which several complaints turn out to be one picture.

Sarita Kulkarni · 33 · school teacher · Solapur · came with trembling of both hands for eight months, and "a lot of other small things"

What she said. "The children notice it when I write on the board. And I am tired all the time, my periods have gone strange, and there is something coming from the breasts sometimes, which I did not want to tell anybody. My mother-in-law says it is only nerves from the job."

What was observed and palpated. A composed woman who sat very still, because sitting still hid the tremor. The trembling was worse when her hands rested in her lap and eased when she reached for the glass of water — the opposite of what she expected anyone to look for. No stiffness of the face, a normal walk. At the navel map: Pan tender, Gas 'I' tender on both calves, Liv° quiet, Mu° tender. Both ring fingers were not painful, which was worth recording because it removed a question.

Several conditions read as one picture. A tremor, tiredness, disturbed periods and a discharge from the breasts, in a woman of thirty-three. Taken separately, four complaints for four departments. Taken together they point at one thing, and the therapist said so out loud: the periods and the breasts belong to a hormone, and that hormone has a blood test.

Which reports mattered, and which did not. She was asked to bring a prolactin and a thyroid report before the third session, and to take the request to her own doctor rather than to a laboratory on her own account. She also brought a two-year-old spine X-ray, which changed nothing and was set aside.

The choice, and why. (20) Medulla, on two grounds at once: it is the member given in Parkinson's and in trembling, and it is the member under which the therapy reports raised prolactin falling. Her tenderness at Gas 'I' would have supported (12) Gas 'I' for the same errand — but she reported loose motions two or three times a week, and Gas 'I' is not given where there are loose motions. So the road that was open was taken.

Session by session. Six sessions over two weeks, (20) Medulla at the head and the digestive formula behind it. At the end of the first week she said she had written a full blackboard without stopping. Her prolactin came back raised; her doctor began his own investigation, which the therapist neither interpreted nor argued with, and about which he was asked twice and declined twice.

Where the first approach was corrected. In week three she asked whether she might have "the higher one, thirty, since twenty is helping." She was told no, and told why, in one sentence: thirty is the inflammation treatment and has nothing to do with dopamine, and giving it would remove the treatment that is working. She understood at once, as patients generally do when the reason is given instead of the refusal.

What this case teaches

A trembling that is worse at rest and better on reaching is a different animal from one that appears only when the hand is used. Write down which one you saw, in those words.

Four complaints in one woman are usually fewer than four problems.

A closed road does not end the journey. Gas 'I' was barred by her motions; (20) Medulla was not. The equivalence taught above is what made that substitution possible.

"A higher number, because it is working" is the commonest request a patient makes in this family, and the answer is always no. Give the reason, not the refusal.

A CASE FROM PRACTICE

The mason whose shoulder pain was older than his shoulder

A composite, assembled to teach the side-effect indication of (30) Medulla.

Devidas Ahire · 52 · mason · Dhule district · came with a burning, puffy ache over the top of the right shoulder and the outer arm, "since a long time"

What he said. "It is not the work, sahib. The work I have done for thirty years. This began after they gave me injections in the hospital, when I had the typhoid. Six years now. Some days it is like a fire under the skin."

What was observed and palpated. A strong man with a hard, warm, slightly puffy band over the outer shoulder and upper arm, tender diffusely rather than at one spot, with a full and painless range of movement — which was the finding that mattered, because a shoulder that moves freely and still burns is not usually a shoulder joint's problem. No fever. At the navel map: Mu clearly painful on the left of the navel, Gal painful. He passed mucus in the stool, which he had never thought worth mentioning and which came out only when he was asked in the plain word for it.

How the symptoms were read. Two findings, one reading. A pain dating from an injection, and inflammation showing at the Mu point with mucus in the stool. Both are indications for the same member of this family: (30) Medulla, which is credited both with ending the side effects of medicines — even a pain years old is finished in one or two treatments — and with the Mu point pain and the passing of mucus together.

Which reports mattered. None of the four he brought. What mattered was the question the therapist asked before touching him: had any doctor ever told him about his heart? No — nothing, ever; no breathlessness climbing, no chest pain on effort. That question, and only that question, stood between him and the treatment.

Session by session. (30) Medulla at the head, twice in the first week. After the second, the mucus stopped and the Mu point graded two plus where it had been four. The shoulder burn was, in his words, "eighty per cent" gone after the third. He asked whether he could have it every day and was told what the card says: for the PMS indication the therapy names one or two treatments, and this is not a treatment you pile up.

What went wrong, and how it was caught. In the fourth week he returned with the burn back, and mentioned in passing that his wife's brother — a compounder — had been giving him the same neck rubbing at home in the evenings, "only better, more times, thirty-five, forty." He had been given something that was no longer (30) Medulla. The home treatment was stopped, the count explained to both of them, and the card written out in Marathi for the household with the number large.

What this case teaches

A pain that began after an injection or an operation, and was not there before, is a recognised indication in this therapy, and (30) Medulla is what is written against it.

The heart question is asked before (30) Medulla, every time, of every patient. It is one line, and it is the whole of the prohibition.

Mucus in the stool is asked about in the word the patient uses. He had passed it for years and never named it.

A count that drifts upward at home is a different treatment, given by a relative who means well. Write the number down.

FROM AYURVEDA AND YOGA

The old name for the hollow behind the ear

The classical Indian surgical texts mapped the body into a set of vital spots — places where flesh, vessel, bone, joint and sinew meet, and where a blow does more harm and a touch does more good than anywhere nearby. Two of them sit in the territory of this article. One is the pair at the joint of the neck and the head; the other is the pair just below and behind the ears — which is, to the inch, where the Medulla treatment begins.

The old teachers gave no chemical reason and claimed no nerve. They had simply noticed, over a very long time, that this small patch of skin is not like the skin an inch away from it. Twenty centuries later a man with two thumbs and a habit of reading noticed the same thing and gave nine different numbers to it. The observation is older than either of the explanations offered for it.

WHAT TO CARRY AWAY

One site, one technique, nine treatments. Both sides of the neck below the ears, ghisāī with the thumbs one by one, the patient seated, six seconds an application, two equals one in the counting. The only thing that changes between members is the number written before the name — and the number is the treatment.

The number is a selector, not a dial. (15) and (10) are different treatments at one site. (30) and (15) are different treatments from (10). Changing a Medulla count does not adjust a dose; it swaps a treatment.

The naming system has a boundary at twelve. From (1) to (12) the number indexes a cranial nerve and is held to do that nerve's work. Above twelve it names a chemical — 15 acetyl choline, 20 dopamine, 30 prostaglandins. Read any code by asking which side of that boundary it falls on.

A prohibition belongs to the count it is written against. (10) — not where the stomach acid is raised, not in diabetes, not in cancer; in heart patients (10) Left Medulla only. (8) — not in inflammation, not in cancer, not in high BP. (30) — not to patients of heart disease. (6) — not to 13–20-year-olds who come about height. (15) — not where (2) Pan is given for a tumour. Five different lists. None of them travels.

(15) Medulla is the first member, not the strongest. It is given before any stimulation of the parasympathetic system, the intestinal nerves, the smooth muscles or any cranial nerve — one treatment of it before any cranial-nerve work — because acetyl choline is the transmitter both nerve systems hand over at.

(6) Medulla and (20) with (8) face opposite ways on one question. Two members are given to raise a child's height; one is withheld from a child who comes about height. The therapy states both, reasons both, and does not resolve them.

The erythropoietin formulas are (15) Medulla (6) Lt. Swt — for acetyl choline and epinephrine — and (30) Medulla (6) Right Swt (6) Lt. Swt — for making erythropoietin. Right before left. Both are printed as to be tried on a suitable patient, and are given here in that condition.

(4) Medulla is the one member with a direction: given clockwise, with T1/T2, credited with the C1–C4 and C5–C8 territories, the chest, the mitral valve, the spleen, the upper diaphragm and the whole upper limb — and with Raman added when the fourth finger of both hands is painful, which is taken as a sign of RA, and only after Liv° and Mu° have been checked.

Two roads reach dopamine. (20) Medulla at the nape and (12) Gas 'I' at the calves — it works like (20) Medulla — because the intestines' own neurons make, in smaller quantity, the same chemicals the brain makes in larger.

The therapy's uncertainties are part of the teaching. This is to be tried. Perhaps this may be useful in correcting some kinds of squint ??? Further research into this is continuing. Further experience will make it understood. They stand where they stand.
