To raise potassium and reduce sodium — high blood pressure will also come down. To stimulate progesterone — if the menses do not come, to bring them. If, because of retention of urine, swelling has remained in the body for 24 hours, this is excellent for reducing the swelling and bringing on urine	Rt. Ov. also makes 20% oestrogen. WD — (1) WD, (3) WD, (6) WD and so on	Given to increase the flow of blood in the uterus in women, and in the prostate gland or genitals in men. Also beneficial for pain or numbness in the lower part of the back, or in the legs. To be given in prolapse of the uterus, in control over urine, in pain in the menses or other kinds of disorder, in infertility and the like. For genetic diseases such as Down syndrome, or club foot, it is given within the New Genes formula. (3) ONS + WD — extremely good for setting the navel	This stimulates the genital organs, so perhaps it will also stimulate oestrogen. Therefore do not give in cancer ▲ Take care	The hedge is inside the prohibition — perhaps — and the bar is drawn anyway, in the restrictive direction. (6) WD is what follows P point immediately.

A CASE FROM PRACTICE

The boy his father brought for two more inches

A composite case, assembled to teach the reasoning rather than taken from one patient's file.

Aniruddh Kale · 12 · school student · Kolhapur · came with short stature — "the shortest in his class" — and a soft swelling at the back of the left thigh

What they came with. The father did the talking. "Everyone in the family is tall. He is not growing. We have two years, three years — after that nothing can be done, they say." The boy said almost nothing, which was itself a finding. There was also, mentioned second and treated by the father as trivial, a soft painless lump the size of a lime at the back of the left thigh, present a year, not growing quickly.

What was observed and palpated. A slight, healthy boy, well below the height expected for his age, with no other sign of ill health. On gentle inward pressure around the navel he was tender at Pan and at Gas 'I'. The thigh lump was soft, freely movable, and not tender.

Which reports mattered. The growth chart the school had kept mattered most of all, because it showed a line that had been running low but steadily and had not fallen away. An old vitamin D report changed nothing. The lump had not been looked at by anybody — and that was the finding that decided the first week: he was sent to have it seen before anything at all was given, and came back with a note calling it a lipoma.

What was chosen, and why. The father, who had done some reading, arrived at the second visit asking for (2) Pan — "for the lump, it ends lumps of fat, it is written". It is written. And it is exactly the point that must not be given to this boy: (2) Pan stops growth hormone. It is not given to children whose height is less, or who are taking treatment from us to increase height. They may be given (4) Pan or (10) Pan. He was given (4) Pan — which is one of the points given in small children to increase appetite and height — with (4) Pit, also for appetite and height, and with (4) Thrd 'P', for growth hormone. The lump was left alone.

Where the first approach did not hold. At six weeks the appetite had changed and the boy was eating like a boy, but the father wanted more and asked whether "the ovary point for the hormone" might be added, having heard of it from a neighbour. He was told, in front of the boy, what is written under both ovary points: oestrogen and progesterone hasten the closure of the epiphyseal line, so that the growth in height stops before its time. That is not a point that may be added to a growth treatment; it is the point most certain to end one.

What went wrong because something was withheld. In the fourth month the boy's mother mentioned, alone and almost in passing, that he had been kept out of the school sports since the previous year "because of the lump" and had stopped eating with the class. Nobody had said this. The treatment was not changed. What changed was that the family was told plainly that a lipoma that has been examined does not stop a boy running, and the school was written to. He grew four centimetres that year, ate at school, and ran.

What this case teaches

The indication list will always offer you something. The prohibition column decides whether you may take it.

A prohibition that names its substitute must be obeyed with the substitute. (2) Pan was refused and (4) Pan was given — not nothing.

A parent who is told the reason will stop looking for the treatment elsewhere. A parent who is only told no will find somebody who says yes.

A lump that nobody has examined is examined before anything is given, however trivial it looks and however much the family wants to talk about something else.

The hormone that ends a child's growing

A growing bone does not grow at its ends. It grows at a thin plate of soft cartilage a little inside each end — a living seam that adds new bone to the shaft and moves outward as it goes. When that seam turns to solid bone, growing is over, permanently.

What closes it is oestrogen — and here is the part that surprises people: in boys as well as in girls. It is why girls, who reach that hormone earlier, stop growing earlier; and why a child whose puberty comes very early ends up shorter than they would have been.

So a rule that says do not give an oestrogen-stimulating point to a child who is being treated to grow taller, because it will close the seam early is not a superstition. It is the correct fact, used correctly, to protect a child — and it is written twice, once under each ovary point, in the same words.
