Pure 1,25 DCC, and where it leads

As has been written above, Pure 1,25 DCC is a very powerful and strong treatment. So it is used very little indeed. But there is one formula built directly out of it.

Two formulas named Pure, and both of them carry the same warning in the same words: very powerful; used very little indeed. That is a class of treatment, not two coincidences. Where the therapy calls a formula Pure, it means the pathway has been provoked without the balancing pair at the end — no Ch. Only, no Round arrow — and rule 3 of sequence tells you exactly what that costs. A formula that ends without a balance is a formula that leaves the patient somewhere. Give the ordinary form unless you have been taught otherwise by somebody who knows why.

The gond laddu, and what the village already knew

Edible gum — gond — gives greater strength to the bones. It is for this very reason that in the villages women are fed the laddu of gond after delivery, so that the bones of both the child and the mother remain strong and healthy.

Nobody arrived at that by measuring anything. What the households had was an observation carried down through grandmothers: a woman who has just given birth has been drawn on heavily, the child has taken what it needed from her, and this is the moment at which her bones must be fed. So a sweet made of gum, ghee and nuts is put into her hands on the day she comes home, whether she wants it or not.

The old practices that survive are usually the ones that were about something. Beside a formula built for the absorption of calcium, the gond laddu is not a quaint aside — it is the same concern, arrived at from the kitchen instead of the clinic.

The vitamin that is not a vitamin

A vitamin, by the original meaning of the word, is something the body cannot make and must therefore eat. Vitamin D fails that test twice over. The body makes it in the skin out of a cholesterol-like chemical whenever sunlight falls on it, and then converts it, in two further steps in two different organs, into a hormone that travels in the blood and switches genes on in distant cells.

It got its name because it was discovered during the hunt for the missing food factors, and by the time anyone understood what it really was the name had stuck.

So a therapy that treats it as a chain of organs to be provoked rather than as a substance to be swallowed is treating it as what it is: a hormone with a three-organ production line, and a fourth organ — the skin — at the head of it.

The old instruction to stand in the early sun

Classical Indian daily routine — dinacharyā, the ordering of a day — puts the taking of sunlight early, while it is still gentle, and treats it as a thing to be done rather than a thing that happens. The morning salutation to the sun, performed at sunrise, presents the whole length of the back to the light repeatedly as the body folds and unfolds.

Nobody in that tradition knew about a chemical lying under the skin waiting for ultraviolet light. What they had noticed was simpler and, it turns out, sufficient: people who are out in the early sun have better bones and better spirits than people who are not, and it is the early sun rather than the fierce midday sun that agrees with a body.

Ten to fifteen minutes, on the beads of the spine, before the day gets hot. It is the cheapest instruction in this wiki and one of the few a patient can begin on the way home.

The shape of a stool is a better measure than the number of times

Ask a hundred people whether their bowels are regular and you will get a hundred opinions. Ask them what the stool looked like and you will get something much closer to a measurement — because the form of a stool tracks, quite faithfully, how long it has spent travelling through the bowel. Hard pellets have been a long time on the road; a thin one has hardly stopped.

Hospitals use a picture chart of seven shapes for exactly this reason, and they use it because a picture crosses language and embarrassment in a way that a question does not.

The comparisons in this article — banana, goat's pellet, cow dung — do the same work, and they do it in vocabulary that every household in India already owns. Whatever one concludes about acid and alkali, the sign itself is real, and this is the right way to ask for it.
