The shoulder that was turned the wrong way

A composite, assembled from the camps where Acid is given by whoever has the strongest legs that morning.

Rukmini Wagh was forty-seven, a cook in a school kitchen outside Satara, with the whole acid picture on her — hard stools every third day, a dry cough, urine that burned. Her card said Acid.

She was laid on her right side, and because the floor was cold and the hall full of strangers she curled: knees in, top shoulder rolled forward and down. Nobody moved her. The therapist put the middle of his right sole on her lower thigh, began to travel from the waist toward the knee, and Rukmini shouted — the kind of shout that makes a hall look up. He tried again with almost nothing behind the foot, and she flinched before he had properly arrived. So he wrote on her card, in the handwriting of a man protecting his patient, "Acid — cannot tolerate", and the point came off her treatment.

Three weeks later a senior watched her being set up and asked for one change first. She turned Rukmini's top shoulder outward — rolled it back and open so the chest faced up and away from the mat — and rebuilt the pillows under the bent left knee until that knee sat level with the waist. Then she asked the same therapist to give the same point, with the same foot, at the same weight.

Rukmini said it was uncomfortable. She did not shout. The point went back on her card that morning. Nothing about the treatment had changed — only that with the shoulder leaning inward, the back of the thigh rises, and a sole travelling down a thigh that has rolled up to meet it is giving a different treatment from the one on the card.

The patient now comes off the chair and goes down onto their side, and something changes in the way the atlas is written: the positioning of this group is written out in more detail than several of its treatments are — the plainest way of saying get this right first.

The reason is mechanical, not kind. A body on its side is a stack of moving parts: the pelvis rolls forward or back, the upper leg drops across the lower one or stays level, the shoulder opens away from the mat or closes toward it. Move any one and the tissue under your foot rises, drops, tightens or slackens — and the point you meant to give is not the point you gave. So this article teaches the pillows before it teaches a single point.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN HERE

By the end of this article you will be able to:

State the rule governing every treatment in this group — the pillow under the head — and say whom it is compulsory for.

Set a patient up for Acid or Fluid: the pillows under the bent knee, the level the upper knee must not fall below, and which way the shoulder is turned — and what happens otherwise.

Set a patient up for Parkhoo: the pillows between both knees, whom that is compulsory for, the shoulder inclined toward the chest, the knees close to it — and why they come up at all.

Give Acid with the middle of your right sole from waist to knee, carrying its own limit — only 2–3 seconds, because the pain can be very great.

Give Rt. and Lt. Parkhoo at both points of the hip, counting correctly — once above and once below is one — and give Folic, Thia, B₁₂ and Nia, each on its own side, at its own hip, in its own direction, on the count 2, 4, 4.

Give Right and Left Vitamin Formation clockwise beside the ball of the thigh bone, from below upward, and Fluid or Alkali as the exact mirror of Acid — repeating the sentence the therapy attaches to it.

अब रोगी चेयर से उतरकर करवट पर लेट जाता है, और एटलस के लिखे जाने के ढंग में भी एक बात बदल जाती है: इस समूह में रोगी को लिटाने का तरीक़ा उसके कई ट्रीटमेंट से भी ज़्यादा खोलकर लिखा गया है — यह कहने का सबसे सीधा तरीक़ा कि पहले इसे ठीक करिए।

वजह मशीनी है, दयालुता नहीं। करवट पर लेटा शरीर हिलते-डुलते हिस्सों की एक चिनाई है: पेल्विस (pelvis) आगे या पीछे लुढ़कता है, ऊपर वाली टाँग नीचे वाली पर गिर पड़ती है या सीध में टिकी रहती है, कंधा मैट से दूर खुलता है या मैट की तरफ़ मुड़ जाता है। इनमें से एक भी हिला, तो आपके पैर के नीचे का ऊतक (tissue) उठ जाता है, बैठ जाता है, कस जाता है या ढीला पड़ जाता है — और जो पॉइंट आप देना चाहते थे, वह पॉइंट आपने दिया ही नहीं। इसीलिए यह लेख एक भी पॉइंट सिखाने से पहले पिलो सिखाता है।

Rt. और Lt. Parkhoo कूल्हे के दोनों पॉइंट्स पर, सही गिनती के साथ दे सकेंगे — एक बार ऊपर और एक बार नीचे मिलकर एक — और Folic, Thia, B₁₂ तथा Nia, हर एक अपनी तरफ़, अपने कूल्हे पर, अपनी दिशा में, 2, 4, 4 की गिनती पर दे सकेंगे।

Right और Left Vitamin Formation जाँघ की हड्डी (femur) की गाँठ के बग़ल में, नीचे से ऊपर की तरफ़, घड़ी की दिशा में दे सकेंगे, और Fluid या Alkali Acid के बिलकुल आईने की तरह — साथ में वह वाक्य भी दोहरा सकेंगे जो यह थेरेपी इस पॉइंट के साथ जोड़कर रखती है।
