The arrow that nobody drew A composite, assembled from the camps where a face is treated by whoever is free that morning.
Her card said Facial point , and under it, in a careful hand, the days and the block it sat in. What it did not say was which way.
Kusum Ratnaparkhi was thirty-four, a schoolteacher from Sangli, and eleven days earlier the left side of her face had stopped working between the morning register and the lunch bell. She had been sent on by people who did everything right: seen the same day, started on tablets, given ointment and a pad at night because the lid would not close. She came to the camp beside all that, not instead of it.
In the first week the therapist who took her worked from the right — the side that opened properly — drawing the tissue across her face to the left and finishing upward at the temple behind the hairline, exactly as the treatment is given.
In the second week he was at a wedding in Kolhapur. The therapist who took the mat read the same card, stood on Kusum's left, and drew the other way — from the dead side toward the living one. Four mornings. On the fourth she said, in the flat voice of somebody who has decided not to argue, that it felt as though her face was being pushed further down. Then she stopped coming.
The senior who was asked about it afterwards did not ask what had been done. She asked one question. "Where is the arrow?"
There was no arrow. There is a symbol for this treatment and there are two of them — a pair of eye-marks with arrows pointing right, and the same pair pointing left — and looking at the patient, whichever is appropriate is written on the card, so that the therapist knows from which side it is to be done and no mistake occurs.
They drew it. Kusum came back, and her recovery afterwards was ordinary and is claimed here for nobody's hands. What the arrow did was smaller than a cure and more important than one. It made sure the hands went the same way twice.
Seated I — Brain, Medulla, Neck took the seated group as far as the base of the skull and stopped at the Necklace. The patient has not moved; your hands are about to — up over the edge of the skull onto the back of the head, round onto the forehead, and then down onto the face. (Figure 19.1)
Until now the patient has not been able to see your hands. At the nape, work arrives from behind and is simply felt. On the face it is watched — and a body that has not been warned will flinch, blink, pull back, or tighten every muscle you were about to work. Telling the patient what is coming is not manners laid on top of the technique. It is part of the technique.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN HERE By the end of this article you will be able to: Say what the face adds to the seated rules of Seated I — Brain, Medulla, Neck — the telling, the nails, the hair , the steadying hand — and give every point here without a nail touching a patient.
Give Brodmann's Area 17 & 18 Ghisai with the edge of the thumb, and state the limit that replaces a count.
Give Hammering with the cloth, the hammer or the finger pads, the whole forehead or the left side — and carry its two precautions exactly, the ear and the nails.
Set a patient up for Shivaji and work its three stations in order, from the shoulder joint to T6–L3.
Give Bell's Palsy from the correct side and write the direction on the card as a symbol, so the next therapist works the same way.
Teach a patient the Teeth Points on themselves, and give Jaw Points and Lacrimal Point with the count that names the card.
Give the four sweeps of Sinus Point and the full sequence of Satnam — both counts, both directions, and the hold that is never released between stages.
Give the four stations of Ear Points in order, left ear first, and say why the patient hears better for a moment after the third.

कुसुम रत्नपारखी चौंतीस साल की थीं, सांगली के एक स्कूल में पढ़ाती थीं। ग्यारह दिन पहले, सुबह की हाज़िरी और दोपहर की घंटी के बीच, उनके चेहरे की बाईं तरफ़ ने काम करना बंद कर दिया था। जिन लोगों ने उन्हें आगे भेजा था, उन्होंने सब कुछ ठीक किया था: उसी दिन डॉक्टर को दिखाया गया, गोलियाँ शुरू हुईं, और रात के लिए मरहम और एक पट्टी दी गई, क्योंकि पलक बंद ही नहीं हो रही थी। कैंप में वे इन सबके साथ आई थीं, इनकी जगह लेने के लिए नहीं।
पहले हफ़्ते जिस थेरेपिस्ट ने उन्हें लिया, उसने दाईं तरफ़ से काम किया — वही तरफ़, जो ठीक से खुलती थी — और नीचे के ऊतक को खींचते हुए चेहरे के आर-पार बाईं तरफ़ ले गया, और आख़िर में बालों की सीमा के पीछे कनपटी तक ऊपर जाकर ख़त्म किया। ठीक वैसे ही, जैसे यह ट्रीटमेंट दिया जाता है।
दूसरे हफ़्ते वह कोल्हापुर में एक शादी में था। जिस थेरेपिस्ट ने मैट सँभाली, उसने वही कार्ड पढ़ा, कुसुम की बाईं तरफ़ खड़ा हुआ, और उल्टी दिशा में खींचा — मरी हुई तरफ़ से जीती हुई तरफ़ की ओर। चार सुबहें। चौथी सुबह उन्होंने उस सपाट आवाज़ में, जो बहस न करने का फ़ैसला कर चुके व्यक्ति की होती है, कहा कि लगता है जैसे उनका चेहरा और नीचे की तरफ़ धकेला जा रहा हो। उसके बाद उन्होंने आना ही बंद कर दिया।
बाद में जिस सीनियर से यह बात पूछी गई, उन्होंने यह नहीं पूछा कि क्या-क्या किया गया था। उन्होंने सिर्फ़ एक सवाल पूछा। "तीर कहाँ है?"
तीर था ही नहीं। इस ट्रीटमेंट का अपना चिह्न होता है, और वह दो तरह का होता है — आँख जैसे दो निशान, जिनके तीर दाईं तरफ़ इशारा करते हैं, और वही जोड़ी बाईं तरफ़ इशारा करती हुई। रोगी को देखकर इनमें से जो ठीक बैठे, वही कार्ड पर लिखा जाता है, ताकि थेरेपिस्ट को पता रहे कि यह किस तरफ़ से देना है और कोई भूल न हो।
तीर खींच दिया गया। कुसुम लौट आईं, और उसके बाद उनका ठीक होना बिलकुल आम बात थी — यहाँ उसका श्रेय किसी के हाथों को नहीं दिया जा रहा। तीर ने जो किया, वह ठीक कर देने से छोटा था और उससे ज़्यादा ज़रूरी। उसने पक्का कर दिया कि दोनों बार हाथ एक ही दिशा में चले।
चेहरा मन का दर्पण होता है। "चेहरा वही आईना है, जिसमें मन दिखता है।"
पारंपरिक कहावत
बैठे हुए — 1: Medulla, Mesencephalon, Dorsal, Raman, Mukha Dhauti, Endorphin बैठे हुए वाले समूह को खोपड़ी (skull) की जड़ तक ले गया और Necklace पर जाकर रुक गया। रोगी अपनी जगह से हिला नहीं है; अब हिलने की बारी आपके हाथों की है — खोपड़ी के किनारे के ऊपर से सिर के पिछले हिस्से पर, वहाँ से घूमकर माथे पर, और फिर नीचे चेहरे पर। (चित्र 19.1)
अब तक रोगी आपके हाथ देख नहीं पा रहा था। गर्दन के पीछे काम पीछे से आता है और बस महसूस होता है। चेहरे पर वह देखा जाता है — और जिस शरीर को पहले से बता नहीं दिया गया, वह चौंकेगा, पलक झपकाएगा, पीछे हटेगा, या ठीक वही मांसपेशी (muscle ) कस लेगा जिस पर आप काम करने जा रहे थे। आगे क्या होने वाला है, यह रोगी को बता देना तकनीक के ऊपर चढ़ाया हुआ शिष्टाचार नहीं है। यह ख़ुद तकनीक का हिस्सा है।

Shivaji के लिए रोगी को तैयार करा सकेंगे और उसके तीनों स्टेशन क्रम से कर सकेंगे — कंधे के जोड़ से लेकर T6–L3 तक।
Bell's Palsy सही तरफ़ से दे सकेंगे और दिशा को चिह्न बनाकर कार्ड पर लिख सकेंगे, ताकि अगला थेरेपिस्ट भी उसी दिशा में काम करे।
रोगी को Teeth Points ख़ुद अपने ऊपर करना सिखा सकेंगे, और Jaw Points तथा Lacrimal Point उस गिनती के साथ दे सकेंगे जिससे कार्ड का नाम बनता है।
Sinus Point की चारों घिसाइयाँ और Satnam का पूरा क्रम दे सकेंगे — दोनों गिनतियाँ, दोनों दिशाएँ, और वह पकड़ जो स्टेशनों के बीच कभी छोड़ी नहीं जाती।
Ear Points के चारों स्टेशन क्रम से दे सकेंगे, पहले बायाँ कान — और बता सकेंगे कि तीसरे के बाद रोगी को थोड़ी देर के लिए बेहतर क्यों सुनाई देता है।
