Pelvic Point: a held treatment at the hip for numbness, pain or burning in the leg

Pelvic is given face down with the affected leg resting out to the side on pillows. It is used for numbness, pain or burning in the leg, and it is the one treatment in the low back group that is held rather than moved.

Overview

The pillows keep the leg level with the body, so nothing is pulled tight before the treatment begins.

Pelvic is used for numbness, pain or burning in the leg. The patient lies face down with one and a half pillows under the chest. The affected leg is taken out to the side and rested on two or three pillows so that it lies level with the body, neither sagging towards the floor nor propped above it. The other leg stays straight.

The therapist, with the weight carried on two chairs, gives a firm, narrow contact with the outer edge of the foot near the top of the thigh bone at the hip. Unlike the strokes and walks of the rest of the low back group, this pressure arrives and stays for a while.

The pillows belong to the treatment, not bedding. A leg left hanging out to the side is held only by its own hip, so everything that will be pressed is already pulled tight. The leg is placed level first, and checked, before any pressure is given.

Why the hip for a leg complaint? With the hip taken out to the side, the top of the thigh bone comes closer to the surface, among the buttock tendons and the short muscles that turn the hip. The sciatic nerve leaves the pelvis just inside this window, one of the few places where the largest nerve in the body comes within reach. The exact method and time are taught hands-on in the course.

Key points

  • Pelvic is for numbness, pain or burning in the leg.
  • The affected leg rests out to the side, level on pillows; the other leg stays straight.
  • It is a held pressure, unlike the moving strokes of the rest of the group.
  • The hold has a firm upper limit and is shortened if the patient cannot bear it.

Safety: when it is held back

  • The time of the hold is a ceiling, not a target. On a first session, in a frail patient, or in someone new to it, it begins well below that limit.
  • If the patient cannot bear it, the time is shortened. The patient is never asked to endure.
  • Before pressing, the therapist tells the patient they may say 'stop' at any moment, and stops at once.
  • Before any low back treatment, the therapist asks about the warning signs that need a doctor the same day. Low back pain: warning signs that mean see a doctor today
