Lipoma and Cyst

A lipoma is a soft, slow-growing lump of fat under the skin. A cyst is a closed sac filled with fluid — in the ovary, behind the knee or elsewhere. Both are usually harmless, but every new lump should be checked by a doctor first.

Left: a skin cross-section of a forearm with a soft oval lump of fat cells in a thin capsule under the skin; right: a uterus with its two ovaries, one ovary carrying a round fluid-filled cyst
Left: a lipoma — a slice through the skin of a forearm shows a soft lump of fat cells in a thin wrapper, sitting under the skin and above the muscle, which is why it moves when pressed. Right: a cyst — the womb and ovaries, with one ovary carrying a round sac filled with clear fluid.
Quick facts
  • About 1 in every 1,000 people has a lipoma
  • Most lipomas first appear between 40 and 60 years of age
  • Most ovarian cysts go away by themselves within a few months

What is Lipoma and Cyst?

A lipoma is a lump of ordinary fat cells wrapped in a thin skin of its own. It sits just under the skin — often on the back, shoulders, arms, neck or thighs — feels soft and rubbery, moves a little when pressed, and grows very slowly. It is not cancer.

A cyst is a closed sac filled with fluid. The commonest kind in women forms on the ovary around the time an egg is released. Another kind, a Baker's cyst, is a bulge of joint fluid behind an arthritic knee. Most cysts are harmless, but a large one can press, twist or burst.

What are the symptoms?

  • A soft, rubbery lump under the skin that moves slightly when pressed
  • Usually painless, and growing slowly over months or years
  • Ovarian cyst: bloating, pressure or a dull ache low in the belly on one side
  • Changes in periods, or needing to pass urine more often
  • Often no symptoms at all — many cysts are found on a scan done for something else

What causes it, and who is more likely to get it?

Lipoma

  • The exact cause is not known; lipomas run in families
  • More common in middle age
  • Some rare inherited conditions cause many lipomas at once

Ovarian cyst

How is it found?

Most lipomas are recognised by a doctor simply by feeling them. A scan is used when there is any doubt, and for cysts inside the body.

Examination

The doctor feels the lump — its size, softness and whether it moves — and asks how long it has been there and whether it is growing.

Ultrasound

Shows whether a lump is solid or filled with fluid. For an ovarian cyst, an internal scan is usual, sometimes repeated a few weeks later to see if it has shrunk.

MRI or CT

Used when the picture is unclear, or to rule out a more serious growth.

Blood test

Sometimes ordered for an ovarian cyst, especially after menopause, to check for signs of cancer.

LMNT's first rule for a lump: a lump nobody has examined is examined before anything is given. The therapist sends it to a doctor first, and for a cyst reads the ultrasound report — its size and which side it is on.

How Neurotherapy sees Lipoma and Cyst

In LMNT, tumours, fibroids and cysts belong to the alkaline side — the conditions with a tendency to grow. Guruji's diary of 1990 also names lumps and lipomas in several places among the diseases in which undigested food is found, and LMNT teaching links lipomas to fat that is not being handled properly by the body.

So the work begins with digestion and the alkali side. Then comes (2) Pan, given for exactly six seconds: in LMNT teaching it works through somatostatin, the body's own 'stop' signal for what is overactive or growing where it should not. For cysts, Anti F. Heparin and — by the cyst's place — Thymus + Chest or the ovary point of that side.

Guruji says
Whether or not the patient gets immediate benefit from our treatment, let no harm reach him through our carelessness — attend to this.

Neurotherapy treatment for Lipoma and Cyst, step by step

  1. The lump is examined first

No treatment is given for a lump that no doctor has seen. Once it has been examined, the therapist checks Liv° and Mu°, asks about the stools, and reads any scan report.

  2. The alkali side — ALTF

For a cyst, ALTF is given — but only after the question of undigested food has been answered. If food comes out in the stool looking as it went in, that is treated first.

  3. (2) Pan — exactly six seconds

Written in LMNT for lipoma, cyst and other unwanted growth. It is never given to a child who is short or being treated for height — such a child may get (4) Pan or (10) Pan instead.

  4. For a cyst: Anti F. Heparin

LMNT's choice among the Heparin formulas when there are fibroids, a cyst or a kidney stone. Like every Heparin formula, it waits while a wound is open or a period is heavy.

  5. By the cyst's place

A cyst in the womb: Thymus + Chest, always with the armpits. A cyst in the ovary: Lt. Ov. for the left side, Rt. Ov. for the right, to increase the blood supply there.

Points and formulas used

(2) Pan

Pan for exactly six seconds — in LMNT teaching it calms what is overactive and checks unwanted growth; not for children who are short or treated for height.

Never do this

  • Any new lump is seen by a doctor before treatment. See one quickly if a lump is hard, does not move when pressed, grows over weeks, or becomes painful, red or warm.
  • Emergency: sudden, severe pain low in the belly on one side — especially with faintness, vomiting or fever — can mean a cyst has burst or twisted. Go to hospital at once. Bleeding after menopause also needs a doctor before the next session.
  • (2) Pan is given for exactly six seconds, and never to children who are short or being treated for height — they get (4) or (10) Pan. Pan is not given to people with schizophrenia, and in fits only inside a Heparin formula. (2) Pan
  • The ovary points (Lt. Ov., Rt. Ov.) are not given in cancer or in the teenage years. Thymus + Chest is not given in pregnancy, inflammation, polio, heart disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune disease, or kidney disease — and when it is given, the armpits must be given too. Th + Ch
  • No Anti F. Heparin (or any Heparin formula) while a wound is open or a period is heavy. No deep or long pressure on the lower belly over a known cyst in the pelvis. Anti F. Heparin (anti-fibrin)
  • Children get half the adult dose and light treatment only, given by a trained therapist.
  • Keep every scan and every appointment with the gynaecologist or surgeon — this treatment is never a reason to miss one. "Come back after the next scan" is the honest way to judge a change.
  • Cancer: if the person has cancer, (10) Pan, Thymus, Pit, Lu + Sh, Rt. Ov / Lt. Ov and (30) Medulla are never given — the therapist changes the plan.
  • Keep taking the medicines your doctor prescribed. Neurotherapy works alongside your medical care, never instead of it.

From practice

The boy who came for height — and the lump on his thigh

A teaching case — a composite from practice, not one patient's file

12 years · short for his age, and a soft, painless lump at the back of the left thigh for a year

What was found
The lump was soft, moved freely and was not tender — but nobody had ever examined it. Before anything was given, he was sent to a doctor, and came back with a note calling it a lipoma.
What was done
His father asked for (2) Pan — "it is written for lumps of fat". It is, and it was still refused: (2) Pan holds back growth hormone, so it is never given to a child being treated for height. He was given (4) Pan with (4) Pit and (4) Thrd 'P' for appetite and height, and the lump was left alone. By six weeks he was eating well.
What it teaches
What is written for a disease is not written for every patient. The first question is always what could harm this person — here, the very point written for the lump.

What research says

  • Strong evidence

Lipomas are harmless growths of mature fat cells under the skin. They usually first appear between 40 and 60, feel soft and doughy, move under the skin, and are mostly recognised by examination alone.

Salam GA. Lipoma excision. Am Fam Physician. 2002.

No clinical trial of Neurotherapy in lipoma or cysts has been published yet. Improvements reported by neurotherapists are clinical observations.

For you

Women with an ovarian cyst

Most cysts shrink on their own. Keep the repeat scan your doctor asks for, and know the emergency sign: sudden, severe one-sided belly pain.

Parents

A child's lump is examined by a doctor first. If your child is short or on height treatment, tell the therapist — the usual lump point is not given.

Adults over 40 with a new lump

Most are lipomas, but let a doctor decide. Show them again if it grows quickly, turns hard or starts to hurt.

This page explains; it does not diagnose. Neurotherapy works alongside your medical care — keep taking the medicines your doctor prescribed, and see a doctor for any new or severe symptom.
