I — The olfactory nerve: smell

A clear nose that smells nothing — and nobody complains of it

What it carries. Smell, and nothing else. It is the shortest of the twelve and the only one that goes straight into the old floor of the brain without a relay.

How the trouble shows. The nose is not blocked, and yet no smell, scent or fragrance can be detected through it. This is called loss of smell — anosmia — and its cause is that cranial nerve number one is not working. Almost nobody complains of it. You have to ask. Ask every patient with a head complaint whether they can smell their own food cooking, and you will find these people at a rate that will surprise you.
